In 2004, Erica Durance made her Smallville debut, dazzling viewers with her endearing take on the Future Mrs. Clark Kent. A credit to her talent and chemistry with the cast (most notably Tom Welling), Durance was quickly signed on for an additional 9 episodes, making Lois Lane a permanent fixture in Clark's adolescent life.

So why no romantic Clark/Lois?

When Lois was first introduced, limitations were put on her character. These restrictions were linked to the production of the new Superman film.

Why now?

With the release of Superman Returns as well as the popularity of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, people are more invested in the relationship than ever before.

Smallville has veered from the Superman mythos on numerous occasions in order to create an incarnation that is entirely its own; Lex Luthor as a childhood friend. Chloe Sullivan as a significant confidant and moral compass. Lana Lang as Clark's first time.

Lois' continued presence has irreparably altered the standard Superman timeline. Because of this, the writers should be free to explore the connection between the two people who will eventually share the greatest love story of all time.
